April 2025
Overview
Thank you for your time and interest in the SSSI programme. We hope this concise document will
provide you with a deeper understanding of the program, including its objectives and intentions.
Adapted Sports Midlands is overseen by Jon Foster, an esteemed educator with 25 years of
experience. He obtained his PE teaching qualification from the University of Exeter and has since
held various positions in sports and pastoral education. In 2015, Jon completed his SENCo award and
currently undertakes commissions with local authorities, spearheading projects related to special
educational needs. Notably, Jon led an ASD school that received an Outstanding rating from OFSTED during his time.
The school component of the program will be led by either Shaun Hayes, Lee Middleton, Frank Gregory.
All of the session’s leads are experienced educators.
The occupational therapy aspect of the program is authored and quality-assured by Susie Crago, a qualified Occupational Therapist.
Schools Programme
The objectives of the program are as follows:
- To expand sporting opportunities for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorders, and Anxiety.
- To collaborate with children in fostering self-esteem.
- To assist in the implementation of provisions outlined in a learner's Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) or personalised learning plan.
- To establish a secure environment conducive to children's achievement, while nurturing social skills and comprehension.
- To enhance children's fundamental motor skills.
- To utilise sport as a medium for occupational therapy support.
Additionally, this program is developed in collaboration with schools, emphasising the importance of
incorporating the perspectives of both children and parents. Its effectiveness relies on the presence
of positive relationships among all stakeholders.
Structure of the Programme
The program will span over a number of agreed weeks, with sessions lasting approximately one hour
each. Session content will be tailored to each school's specific needs, ensuring effectiveness in
fostering positive relationships and meeting the learners' requirements. While the program
incorporates sports, its focus lies more on utilising sports as a comprehensive therapeutic tool.
A programme overview will be shared with the school detailing content with the school prior to
commencement of the first session.
To ensure the program's efficacy and the appropriate design of sessions, the following documents
can be used to provide information to the program lead:

- Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs)

- Behaviour Support Plans
- Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or equivalent documents
- Pupil Profiles
- Professional Reports such as Educational Psychology (EP), Speech and Language Therapy (SLC),
Occupational Therapy (OT)
- Data from any Special Educational Needs (SEN) assessments
- Adapted Sports Midlands (ASM) Child Profile
Although not exhaustive, this information serves as a starting point to support each learner
effectively within the program. The school will be asked to transfer information into a secure Google
folder prior to the programme's commencement.
Groupings
Groups will be carefully constructed by placing children with the most suitable peers, with each
group consisting of a maximum of six children. Staffing will be adjusted accordingly. While sessions
are initially planned to last approximately one hour, flexibility is acknowledged due to the personalised nature of the approach. As the program evolves, session durations may be adjusted accordingly.
Session content will be emailed to schools three days prior to the session, allowing sufficient time
for schools to share and provide support to children with any anxiety issues or concerns. Information
will be communicated in written format, accommodating any visual aids the school may utilise.
Session 1 & 2 will be required to use for testing purposes and may take a slightly different format as will the final two sessions of the block.
The school will be required to send names of learners prior to first session.
Measuring Impact
The programme will use formative assessment to inform planning and development. As the
programme will be personalised to the groups needs then targets and KPI’s will be agreed directly
with the school. These will be monitored regularly. The programme will make use of appropriate
baseline date and set SMART targets for learners to work towards. Progress data will be fed back to
schools on a regular basis.
Venue
The programme is most effective in an environment that is conducive to supporting learners with
SEN and that can accommodate sports activities. The school will identify areas to hold these sessions
with some flexibility.
ASM will provide equipment, but the school may agree that further onsite can be utilised.
Insurance & Vetting

Documents will be shared with the school prior to the commencement of the programme.
